Brief Synopsis of Horse Racing
Horse
racing has been one of the oldest sport. It involves the racing of
horses with jockeys mounted on them around a course or track which is
covered in soil. Money is wagered on these beast at different levels,
(which will be explained further on) and the owner of the bet slip
either wins, loose or breakeven.

How horses are prepared for racing
Horses
are bred from different stables and are given a continuous training
schedule leading up to race day. A Horses training schedule should not
lead them to over training which will tire them during race day or under
training which can cause muscle cramps in horses. Horses are natural
born runners, it is what they were meant to do. Horses in captivity,
stables and farms need to run periodically until they are at age where
running is exhausting to them and they then only graze on the land.
Horses nutrition and if any medication must be given for the horse to
perform optimal and to maintain a natural healthy animal. Thoroughbreds
are not just fed on grass in pastures, but are given natural nutritional
supplements which will allow the horse to be and maintain good health.
Grooming is also important as animals are cleaned, properly "shoed" and
if necessary massaged to allow good muscle contraction and relaxation.
Before horses are mounted by jockeys, they are examined and inspected by officials to see their racing conditions. They are also paraded by groomers to the public and then mounted with saddles for racing. Jockeys are mounted on these beautiful animals and then lead out by groomers unto the track. They are then paraded on track for a brief moment and then lead trodded to the starting gates. The starting gates are numbered from 1 - 14 and the race horses are numbered accordingly. Each horse is placed in its gate according to its number. Example, gate 1 will start horse 1, gate 2 will start horse 2. The gates are just one long entry point for the horses and are not separated. Once all horses are placed in their starting gates, they are then given a green light for go and all gates are burst open at the same time and the excitement begins.

Wagering and Winning
The
main function of any horse racing business is of course to make money,
they make money through people who wage bets and loose, sponsorship,
airtime and other indirect ways. But the bulk of their business profits
is the lost money gambled.
Odds on Horses
What are the odds that horse 10 will beat horse 5? That depends on many factors such as the horses capability and track records, horses non racetrack time, bred genetics and many other factors influence the odds which are placed on horses. Performance though is one main factor. If a horse continues to perform poorly in training and never wins any race, it is given a much higher odds of a win than a Thoroughbred with good performance and win records. Here is a quick synopsis of the odd numbers and how to read them.
The most basic information there are the win odds quoted on each horse. Those don't tell you what the horse will pay, but the amount of profit you will get and the amount you have to bet to get it. 6-5 means you will get $6 profit for every $5 wagered. 20-1 means you get $20 profit for every $1 wagered.

Bet Types
Direct Win:
The direct win is when you wager on a horse that will directly win the
race. This is probably the most wagered type at the tracks.
Place: When you bet that a horse will place means that you are betting that the horse either comes in first, second or third. A "placed bet" is of a lower odds than a direct win. So if you had only made a place bet on a horse and that horse wins the race, you will get the odds for the placed bet instead of a direct win. The small table below will give you an idea of the place bet system. Place bets are only valid for first through third place.

If you did not bet a
win on Horse "Clives Harpoon" and wagered a place bet, you would be
given the $ 17 payout instead of the $25.
Quinella:
The Quinella is a term given to a bet that picks the two horses which
will come first and second no matter the order. So if you bet that
horses number 6 and 7 will come first or second, doesn't matter which
one comes first or second. The Odds of the quinella are much higher than
a direct win, so more money will be won if the quinella comes through.
Exacta: In the exacta, you can pick the horses that will finish first and second in exact order. All horse tracks offer exacta betting on most races. So if you wager on horses 6 and 7 in an exacta or sometimes called a perfecta, you must specifically state which horse you bet will come first and which horse will come second.
Trifecta:If you are really lucky or really know your horses, you can wager on what is called a trifecta. A trifecta is where three horses are placed in the exacta order of finishing 1, 2, and 3. As the odds for winning increases so does the payout. Placing a $100 dollar bet on a good trifecta will give you a broad nice smile on you face when collecting your winnings.
Double Event: This waging is when you select the two winners from two consecutive races. So if you are wagering on race 1 and race 2, you must bet on the horse that will win in race 1 and the horse that will win in race 2. If one horse win and the other does not, you will lose your bet, both horses must win for you to see dividends.
Pick Four: Are you feeling a bit more lucky? well pick four is for you, you are wagering that your choice of 4 horses will win in FOUR consecutive Races. So your wager is on horses 6, 5, 7 & 8 (all in 4 consecutive races)
High Five: You are wagering that your choice of 5 horses will finish 1st through 5th places in a single race. These bets are not available in all races as many factors depict if a customer can wager on a high 5 race such as the amount of horses in the race. Races with 7 or less horses are usually excluded from High 5 or another term pick 5 wagering.
Pick Six: No, this is not the lotto, you must be very lucky to burst this bubble, you are wagering that your choice of 6 horses will win their respective Races. The odds of picking the six winners in six races are high and so are the payoffs.
Pick 9: Same as the Pick six, the only difference is that the odds are stacked much more higher and so is the payout. Betting beg on a pick 9 can give you millions in winnings.

Illicit Racing Activities
There are many who do illegal acts to allow their horses to win races. The few mention below are just a tip of the iceberg.

Hard work has to put into these horses to keep them healthy and happy, fit and strong so they can be ready to have a blast at the track. One of the most important part of horse racing is the health and care of these animals. - Horse Drugs
This is probably one of the worst things that a trainer or owner could do to win a race. Feeding the horse drugs to enhance it's performance. In the past, horses have died because of this illegal act. That's a hard price for an innocent animal to pay for a win. - Pull up and let through
There are many who are involved in this and sometimes it is quite hard to spot. Jockeys are paid to pull up or ease down their horses in-order to let a specific horse to go through and win.
